ALICE STICKLE
ALICE STICKLE April 28, 1929 – September 14, 2025
Mrs. Alice Stickle passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at the age of 96 years. Alice Anhorn was born April 28, 1929, on the family homestead south of Hatton, Saskatchewan. She was the seventh baby born to Emmanuel and Katherina Anhorn.
Our Nanny Alice ‘Grandma Alice’ regaled us with many stories of the days on the farm – including her brothers’ hijinx and the family horse, Billy, pulling the wagon or the sleigh to Red Lake School – three miles each way. She never talked of hardships, just about the big gardens, bringing in the water buckets and feeding the chickens. Mom also said she would never eat mutton again after moving to town!
Alice and her family moved to a house in the Flats in 1945, and she began working at Medalta Potteries. Her job was to work with the line of girls who put the handles on the cups before they were put into the kiln. She always said it wasn’t hard but you had to pay attention. It was at Medalta that she met Bob Stickle and when they were married in 1948, they moved to a small basement suite on the Flats. Bob left Medalta during the strike and Mom began a twenty-one year career at Woolworth’s. Here she continued to have fun with the girls and she coyly said, “We got away with it too!”
Bob and Alice were blessed with two children, Gail and Glen and they were strong role models for them. Along with Bob’s parents, they loved to go fishing and travelling to BC in the summers with the kids. In the winter they danced at the Elks and Moose Lodges with their many friends. Being season ticket holders for the Tigers games gave them many more fun evenings. After retirement, they camped in their van and travelled with the same group of friends to the U.S., Europe (including Paris) and Hawaii.
Mom was a member of the Order of the Royal Purple, where she passed through all of the Chairs. Her good humour and determination helped her work at the Stampede grounds selling Elks raffle tickets for over twenty years.
Mom had detailed memories of the past, and was the record keeper of the family – never forgetting a date or a special occasion. She had a great sense of humour – she could easily laugh at herself. Alice always wanted to hear what was new in the family news. Being a realist, she saw things from a practical point of view. After Bob’s death in 1990, her fierce independence allowed her to live alone in her own home until she was 96 years old. She loved watching curling on TV and liked to catch up on the news. She read the paper every day and worked through lots and lots of wordsearch puzzle books.
Her love for her family – her husband Bob, her children Gail and Glen, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was evident in her words and deeds. It would not be unusual to see her pushing her grandkids on the merry-go-round or showing them how to hang upside down on the clothesline posts. She was the “Smartie Nanny”, who always had a box of smarties in the dresser drawer, a package of Dad’s cookies in the kitchen cupboard and was always ready with an order of peanut butter toast. Later she became Great Grammy as she welcomed a new generation of great-grandchildren to love.
Alice was predeceased by her eight siblings and her husband, Bob. Always cherishing the wonderful memories are Gail (Randy) Ferris and Glen (Joanne) Stickle along with her four grandchildren (Jennifer, Sara-Lynn, Jess and Christopher) and six great-grandchildren. And, with such a large family, memories will be shared by many many nieces and nephews. We will miss her!
At Alice’s request, a graveside celebration will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend the service, are asked to gather at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat between 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. (Condolences may be shared by visiting our website at
