A suspicious package was discovered in a garbage bin on Tuesday afternoon wrapped in bags, tied with cords and had audible ticking sounds in the 300 block of South Railway Street SE.

Immediately the area was cordoned off by responding police around 4:30 p.m. and the Medicine Hat Police Service Explosive Disposal Unit was called to investigate the package.

Following an x-ray of the package, it was determined to be not of risk to the public and was safely removed for the garbage bin.

Police say they are still investigating where the package came from.

Impaired driver hits tree, injuries passenger

Brooks RCMP have suspended the license of a driver who lost control of their vehicle and collided with a tree Tuesday afternoon and failed an alcohol screening roadside test.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., Mounties arrived at the scene of the single vehicle collision near the intersection of 7th Street and Railway Avenue and observed the driver of the vehicle walking around while a passenger remained trapped in the back seat.

Local firefighters and EMS were able to safely extract the passenger, who was then rushed to hospital for medical care.

According to witnesses, the driver was travelling on 7th Street at a high rate of speed and attempted to make a left turn onto Railway Avenue at approximately 80 km/h and lost control of the vehicle, which collided into a tree.

Police say the impact caused the tree to fall onto the vehicle, resulting in significant damage.

The driver was issued an immediate roadside drivers license suspicion and ticketed for careless driving.
