The nomination period for this year’s municipal election closed Monday at noon, officially capping the new record for council hopefuls.

Six candidates are running for mayor of Medicine Hat. The hopefuls include incumbent mayor Linnsie Clark, former MLA Drew Barnes, former police chief and current councillor Andy McGrogan, former councillor Kris Samraj, multiple-time runner Alan Rose and first-time candidate Mark Fisher.

Nominations closed with an all-time high 39 candidates running for city council. At least five new members will be elected, with only three incumbent councillors seeking a chair.

Couns. Darren Hirsch, Cassi Hider, Ramona Robins and Allison Knodel all opted not to run again, while McGrogan is vying for mayor.

The last candidates to join the race for council were Dan Reynish, former CHAT-TV news anchor, and former mayor Ted Clugston. Both filed their candidacy on Friday.

Candidates will now begin campaigning in earnest ahead of election day Oct. 20. Advance polls are open Oct. 4 and then Oct. 14-18, while special (mail-in ballots) will be available starting Wednesday.

Stay tuned to the Medicine Hat News online for more information about candidates as the election period nears.
