Cubs pickup win in lone weekend of preseason action

The Medicine Hat Cubs split their lone weekend of preseason action.

The Cubs faced the Coaldale Copperheads for a pair of tune-up games over the weekend, winning 4-3 Saturday on the road before falling 1-0 Sunday at the Kinplex.

Tash Armstrong, Nolen Sutherland, Blake Dosenberger and Owen Gustafson scored for the Cubs in Saturday’s win. Marlo DeRosa started in net, making six saves. Connor Bender worked the second half of the game, making 19 saves.

Kayne Wright started in net for the Cubs in the loss Sunday, stopping all but one of the 17 shots he faced. DeRosa turned aside all 19 shots he faced working the second half of the game.

The Cubs open the 2025-26 HJHL season with a pair of games on the road. The season kicks off on Friday with the Cubs taking on the High River Flyers. They have a Saturday off before heading back on the road Sunday for Coaldale to face the Copperheads. They return to the Kinplex and make their home debut on Sept. 26, hosting the Cochrane Generals for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

They’ll also host the Airdrie Thunder on Sept. 28 for a 3 p.m. contest.
