Primary Care Alberta has appointed Dr. Kim Hogarth as the province’s first chief nursing officer.

Nurses make up nearly half of PCA’s workforce.

“Throughout my career, making sure nurses can deliver the best care possible has always mattered most,” says Hogarth. “It’s an honour to represent nursing voices and help improve care for Albertans.”

Hogarth has experience as registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse, a nurse practitioner and an academic.

Hogarth was already the executive director of PCA. She will continue in this role while assuming her new CNO duties.

“Primary care works best when every member of the team contributes their expertise, including at the leadership table,” said PCA CEO Kim Simmonds. “With Dr. Hogarth as CNO, nurses will remain part of key decisions about how we strengthen and improve access to primary care.”

Hogarth is also a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta. She is passionate about Indigenous health and aims to use her role to build strong partnerships with Indigenous communities.

As CNO she will work closely with the PCA’s chief medical officer, Dr. Ernst Greyvenstein.
