September was declared Prostate Cancer Awareness Month at city hall Thursday, encouraging men to be more aware of their health.
The mayoral declaration took place Thursday morning, acknowledging that prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men, with one in eight being diagnosed with the condition within their lifetimes.
It is estimated that roughly 24,000 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year alone.
However, with early detection, the survival rate of prostate cancer can be as high at 90 per cent, and as such, Prostate Cancer Canada recommends men get a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test in their 40s to establish their baseline.
It was noted by attending members of the Medicine Hat Prostate Cancer Support Group that the Man Van, which offers free PSA testing to men within the age bracket most at risk, will return to the city on Oct. 5.
