newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The government of Alberta is granting $8 million to the new Alberta Youth Employment Incentive, which will provide funding to employers for hiring, training and employing youth aged 15-24 starting in October. Youth unemployment has been rising across Canada, and Alberta’s youth unemployment rate of 17% is higher than the national average of 14.6%. Employers who hire 1-2 young workers for a combined total of at least 400 hours will be eligible to receive $4,000 under the incentive. Employers who hire 3-5 young workers with a combined total of at least 750 hours will be eligible to receive $7,500. The program will be managed by the not-for-profit organization CAREERS. When the incentive becomes available, employers can apply through the CAREERS webpage. 6
