newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Starting Thursday, new and returning Medicine Hat College students will have the opportunity to start their year of studies off on the right foot by attending Thrive sessions designed to prepare them for their time at MHC. Two days of sessions will be available online in person Thursday and Friday, and included are guided tours of the campus, allowing newbies to meet with student ambassadors, as well as being set up with student ID and having early access to textbooks. Thrive sessions kicks off Thursday at 10 a.m. with an academic coaching session titled ‘Student Success Superpowers: Secret Weapons of Well-performing Students,’ which will be held online and in person in class S103. The day will continue with two additional workshops; ‘Library Power-Ups’ and ‘Career Quest: Intro to Career Development,’ and wrap up with class registration support which will run in the library from 1-3 p.m. On Friday, ‘Student Success Superpowers’ and ‘Library Power-Ups’ workshop will be repeated, and registration service support will run from 9-11 a.m. Friday will wrap up with counselling services starting at 1 p.m. Following the Labour Day long weekend the college will host its New Student Orientation event on Sept. 2., beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a welcome presentation in the college theatre for Group A. This presentation will include a speech from student council president, Maria Solorzano. Program orientation will follow at 10 a.m. and students will be able to meet their instructors and classes and learn what to expect over the year. Over the noon hour there will be a free lunch for students outside the main entrance. Members of support services will be on hand and yard games will be set up by the student council. The welcome presentation for Group B begins at 11:30 a.m. in the college theatre, with program orientations scheduled after the free lunch. A mandatory residence orientation will be held from 4-5 p.m for all students staying in residence. Later in the evening, the student council will host a welcome-back “Neon Bash” at the Crave courtyard from 5-9 p.m. that will include a beer garden, DJ, food, games and activities. In Brooks, a welcome presentation held in the cafeteria will include a speech from Nancy Brown, vice president academic and provost. Following the welcome speech, students will meet their instructors and classmates during a program orientation planned until 11:30 a.m., before a free lunch will be provided to students. During the afternoon there is a mandatory hour-long residence orientation meeting that begins at 1 p.m. for all students living in residence this year. Currently students can visit the college homepage and participate in a virtual tour for new students that covers how to access your schedule, use college technology and find support on campus. 18
