sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Sylvan Lake Gulls need just one more win for their first championship in franchise history. The Gulls opened up the 2025 WCBL finals with a 3-2, 11th inning win Thursday at Regina over the Red Sox to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. It’s the first trip to the finals for the Gulls in their five-year existence. The two teams traded runs across four innings before the game went into extra frames. Regina opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning. Sylvan Lake responded in the top of the fourth with a groundout RBI. Regina scored in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run from Matthew Fox and the Gulls tied the game up in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Sylvan Lake took the lead in the top of the 11th inning with a little help from a former Medicine Hat Maverick. Michael Quick, who played for the Mavs in 2024, got on base with a one-out single, moving up to second on an error. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and with runners on the corners, took home on a double steal for the 3-2 lead. Quick joined the Gulls mid-season, playing just 15 games during the regular season, collecting 15 hits and six RBIs, slashing .294. In five playoff games, all Gulls’ wins, Quick has 10 hits and two RBIs with a .435 batting average entering play Friday. The Gulls will get two shots at home to capture the crown, with a 1-2 series structure giving the Gulls home field advantage for Games 2 and 3 of the series. Game 2 was Friday and not complete by press time. If needed Game 3 would be Saturday. 10
