The Western Canadian Baseball League finals are nearing shape.

The WCBL playoffs entered the division finals on Sunday with the Regina Red Sox and Saskatoon Berries facing off in the East and the Okotoks Dawgs and Sylvan Lake Gulls meeting in the West.

Regina earned their spot in the division finals with a 2-0 sweep of the Medicine Hat Mavericks. The Berries beat the Moose Jaw Miller Express in a back-and-forth, decisive Game 3 Saturday, winning 16-12 in the 10th inning.

Moose Jaw led the game 3-0 through three innings before Saskatoon rattled off 10 straight runs to lead 10-3. The Millers responded with a nine-run eighth inning, to give them a 12-10 lead. The Berries scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to preserve their season and send the game to extra innings.

Moose Jaw was unable to score in the top half of the 10th. In their half, the Berries loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, bringing Carter Beck to the plate with nobody out. He hammered a pitch over the scoreboard in the right field of Saskatoon’s Cairns field to send the Berries to the East finals for the second straight season.

They hosted Regina on Sunday for Game 1 of the East finals, falling 8-7 to the Red Sox. Regina led 5-0 in the top of the third before Saskatoon scored four runs in the bottom of the frame and added three more in the fourth for a 7-5 lead. The Red Sox tallied solo tallies in the sixth and seventh inning to force extra innings where they eventually won in the 11th.

Ayden Page threw four shutout innings out of the Red Sox bullpen, striking out six Berries’ batters.

Game 2 of that series was Monday at Regina and if needed, Game 3 would be tonight in Saskatoon. Regina has not been in the WCBL finals since losing to the Okotoks Dawgs in 2019. Game 2 Monday was not complete by press time.

West divison

Sylvan Lake punched their ticket to the West division finals with a 6-2 win Friday over the Lethbridge Bulls. The Gulls led 2-1 after four innings and added four runs in the sixth for the 6-2 final.

They opened the West finals with a 7-3 win Sunday over the Okotoks Dawgs, who swept the Brooks Bombers, for a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

The Gulls and Dawgs were tied 2-2 through four innings with Sylvan Lake pulling ahead with a four-run sixth inning. Okotoks scored in the bottom of the frame and the Gulls added a run in the ninth to nullify any comeback.

The Gulls hosted the Dawgs on Monday for Game 2, which was not complete by press time. If needed, Game 3 would be tonight back in Okotoks.

The WCBL finals are slated to get underway Thursday.
