Medicine Hat News The Medicine Hat Mavericks were on the wrong side of history Sunday in Saskatoon. The Berries scored seven runs in the 10th inning to beat the Mavs 14-10, winning their 45th game of the season, a new single season WCBL record. Medicine Hat came into the contest off a 14-7 loss at Weyburn to the Beavers on Saturday, with the loss Sunday their third in a row. The Mavs opened the scoring in the top of the first with a double off the centre field wall from Warman, Sask. product Tyler Vanneste. Saskatoon scored a run in the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field to tie the game up at 1-1. The first five innings flew by with six hits between the two clubs before the offence started in the sixth. The Mavs scored three runs in the sixth inning, kicked off by a single from Carter Roth down the third base line. Blake Dale followed it up with a bases-loaded hit in the infield that scored a run on an error. Jaden Babiuk finished off the inning with an RBI single for the 4-1 lead. Saskatoon answered back, scoring a pair with a two-run home run off the bat of Nathan Houston to make it a 4-3 game. The Mavs responded with two runs in the seventh, scoring once on a fielders choice error off the bat of Jamel Chabot. Vanneste plated a run with a single up the middle for a 6-3 lead. The Berries tallied two runs with two RBI singles to cut the Mavs’ lead to 6-5. Saskatoon tied the game up and then grabbed a lead in the bottom of the eighth with another two RBI singles to lead 7-6 heading into the ninth inning. The Mavs were down to their final strike with a two-out single from Babiuk to plate the tying run. They held Saskatoon scoreless in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. Micah Dvorak plated the automatic runner on second with an RBI single for an 8-7 lead in the 10th. Vanneste singled to score Dvorak with his second RBI on the day. They ended the inning with a third run on a fielders choice play as Saskatoon nabbed a runner out at home before the throw from the catcher to first for the double play hit Adam Vulcano in the back of the head as he ran down the line. A runner scored on the misplay and the Mavs carried a 10-7 lead into the bottom of the 10th. The Berries struck quick, with a two-run home run from Ethan Murdoch making it a 10-9 game. Saskatoon tied the game. They tied the game on a sacrifice fly to left field that left runners on second and third. The Mavs intentionally walked the bases loaded to bring Mason Roell to the plate. He delivered for the Berries, with a game-winning, grand slam to left field for the walk-off win. Tyler Spruiell started the game on the mound for the Mavs, working four innings allowing one run on two hits and two walks, striking out one. Jensen Cockrell threw two innings, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks. Garrick Levesque took over to start the seventh, charged with two runs on three hits and a walk. Diego Centella took over in the frame, recording the final two outs and working two more innings with two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out three. Degan Sanders worked the 10th inning for Medicine Hat. The Mavs (34-20) are back at Saskatoon on Monday for a 1 p.m. contest against the Berries in the final game of the regular season for both clubs. 14
