A pair of Medicine Hat brothers won gold and silver in provincial tennis competition.
Mike and Thomas Fentabil represented the Medicine Hat Tennis Club at the U12/U16 3-Star Junior Alberta Tennis Tournament July 24-27. The brothers, Mike (15) and Thomas (13), played at the U16 level and started the tournament on opposite sides of the draw.
Mike won his side of the draw, with a first round of 32 match 6-2, 6-1; taking his second match in three sets: 3-6, 7-5,10-5. He made it to the finals winning his quarter-final match 7-6, 6-4 and his semifinal 6-4, 6-2 against the tournament’s top-seeded player.
Thomas won his round of 32 match in three sets, a nail bitter of 4-6, 7-6, 10-6. In the round of 16, he beat the second-seeded player 6-2, 6-1. He made it to the finals by winning his quarter and semifinal 6-1, 6-2, and 6-2, 6-1. respectively.
Both Fentabil brothers’ success set up an all Medicine Hat final, won by Thomas 6-2, 6-3.
Both are ranked provincially and stand as the top ranked among junior players at the Medicine Hat Tennis Club. They will both be playing in the upcoming Tennis Alberta Junior Tournament held at the Medicine Hat Tennis Club this upcoming weekend.
Also competing in the tournament is another Medicine Hat Junior, ninr-year-old Rowan Ferris. It will be Ferris’ second Tennis Alberta tournament, the first held in Calgary where she gained high-level experience, finishing with one win, and two losses.
