jtubb@medicinehatnews.com@ReporterTubb The Medicine Hat Knights of Columbus Knights couldn’t carry on with their recent success against the Havre Northstars. The Knights lost 10-4 Friday to the No. 1 seed Northstars in the second game of the Districts tournament held in Lewiston, Mnt. They beat Havre in three of four games in the regular season, including two straight wins to end the season before districts. They scored first in the loss Friday, with a two-run first with an RBI single from Ethan Grad and a bases-loaded walk from Nixon Davis in the opening frame. Havre scored six unanswered runs to grab the lead they would continue to add onto for the win. Head coach Cole Schreiber says the early start gave them momentum that dissipated with mistakes. “Against good teams, you can’t make mistakes like that and if it was one or two mistakes, it probably would have been okay, but we kind of unraveled a little bit,” Schreiber said. “To score two in the first we’re pretty happy with that, but we weren’t able to limit the damage in the bottom half, because they came out and put up five. “They gave us chances…We just could not seem to find that big hit when we needed to and if we get a big hit in the second or third, maybe we get the wheels turning. But that’s the game of baseball, you get the big hit when you got runners on. We had it yesterday and just couldn’t find it today.” The Knights beat the Fort Macleod Senators 9-3 on Thursday to open Districts They scored in the fourth on an RBI single from Liam Cunningham and in the seventh on a groundout off the bat of Ethan Bowey. The Knights drew eight walks in the loss. James Cole started for the Knights, working an inning with two strikeouts. Kane Bishop took over and pitched 1.1 innings, Dylan Nelson threw the last 3.2 innings with a strikeout. Thye’ll look to bounce back and keep their season alive Saturday, facing the Tri-County Cardinals. “They have a pretty old squad, some bigger guys, so we are going to have to play our best,” Schreiber said. “Ethan Bowey is going to be pitching for us and that’s a great guy to have the ball tomorrow in a win or go home kind of game. So defensively, we have to clean it up. We have to be a little bit better than we were today. “But we know they’re going to be good. The good thing for us is they’ve played an extra game so far, so they’re a little bit thinner on pitchers than we are. But at the end of the day, that doesn’t matter too much, we still gotta go out and take care of business.” With the season being at a win or go home point, Schreiber says there’s no better time to find success. He says they have to play mentally sharper and play for each other. “It can’t be one individual effort or one guy, it’s a team game and if somebody makes a mistake, you need your leaders to pick those guys up right now,” Schreiber said. “We get to go at it early (Saturday) morning, so we don’t have to sit around too long, we get to get right back at it again. I’m excited, I think the guys are excited. It’s the time of year now where every win that you get, you’re sending somebody else home. So you just have to keep going and we’ll live in one inning at a time.” 15
