sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Medicine Hat Mavericks kicked off the second-half of the week in high fashion. The Mavs scored 17 runs on 21 hits Wednesday night for a 17-6 win at Moose Jaw over the Miller Express. The win opens up a stretch of five games in seven nights for the Mavs, with a game Thursday back at Moose Jaw before the Mavs host the Regina Red Sox tonight for a double header. The Mavs scored five runs in the forth inning and added seven runs in the eighth inning to propel them through the win. Two hitters had four hits, third baseman Tyler Vanneste had four knocks with three RBIs, outfielder Yusei Uzawa had four hits with an RBI, scoring three times. Aaron Vulcano had a solo home run in the seven-run inning, his seventh home run of the season. He finished with three hits and two RBIs. Shortstop Johnny Vulcano had a hit and an RBI in six plate appearances. Wednesday was his first game played since July 17, a 12-1 win at Moose Jaw. In that contest, Vulcano collided with centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. while both tried to make a play in the outfield. Vulcano then roped a two-run double later in the July 17 game before pulling himself from the contest. Mavs’ starter Luis Diaz worked through the sixth inning, finishing with the win, allowing the four runs against (three earned) on four hits, striking out one. He sits second in the WCBL with 53.1 innings pitched. The Mavs double header tonight will see them don the alternate identity Baby Spreys jersey for both games, the final night they will wear the jerseys that pay homage to the franchise’s history and the Ospreys that live at Athletic Park. The first game of the double header starts at 5 p.m., the second is slated to start at 7:05 p.m. 10
