Medicine Hat News The Medicine Hat Mavericks reached the double-digit mark Thursday for a second straight win at Moose Jaw. The Mavs scored 14 runs in four innings to propel them to a 16-10 win at Moose Jaw over the Miller Express. They beat the Millers 17-6 on Wednesday. Thursday’s win, the final regular season meeting between the Mavs and Millers, splits the season series between the East division clubs at 5-5. The Mavs opened the scoring with a two-run first inning with both scores coming on one swing. First baseman Aaron Vulcano basted a two-run home run, scoring brother Johnny Vulcano who doubled to open the inning. Aaron hit a solo home run in Wednesday’s win, giving him two long balls in the last two games and eight on the season. Moose Jaw tied the game up in the bottom of the second, opening the inning with three straight singles. They scored a run on an RBI single and a passed ball for the 2-2 game. That was the closest Moose Jaw got in the game as the Mavs offensive run kicked off in the fifth. They scored six runs in the top of the fifth for an 8-2 lead. Centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. opened the inning with a solo home run, his fifth home run of the season. The Mavs loaded the bases with three straight singles, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of  outfielderAdam Vulcano. Catcher Jaden Babiuk was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Outfielder Micah Dvorak drove in a run on a fielders choice play in the infield. Two more runs scored on a double from second baseman Blake Dale. The inning capped off with an RBI single from outfielder Yusei Uzawa. On the mound for the Mavs, Danny Retzlaff worked five innings for the win, allowing just the two runs on three hits and three walks, striking out eight. The Mavs scored one run in the sixth on an RBI double from third baseman Carter Roth. Moose Jaw answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring a run on a wild pitch. Tyler Cutler worked the sixth for the Mavs, allowing the run on a hit and a walk, recording a strikeout. The Mavs exploded again, scoring five runs in the seventh inning for the 14-3 lead. An RBI single from Uzawa was the appetizer for the big inning, his second RBI of the night. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Aaron Vulcano who drew a walk of his own, scoring a run. Roth grounded into a fielders choice to score another run and an RBI double off the bat of Adam Vulcano put another notch on the scoreboard. The inning was capped off with an RBI single from Nate King, who entered the game for Babiuk in the fifth inning. Jace Martinez took over on the mound for the Mavs in the seventh inning, making his WCBL debut. The Millers scored four runs, two coming on a home run off the bat of William Edwards. The other two runs came on a double off the bat of Jackson Martin, making it a 14-7 Mavs’ lead. The Mavs’ offence kept kicking, scoring twice in the top of the eighth for the 16-7 lead. Freeman Jr. scored on a wild pitch and Aaron Vulcano notched an RBI single to finish his night with five hits and four RBIs. David Heinen took the bump in the bottom of the eighth, surrendering three runs on four hits before recording three straight outs. He worked a clean ninth inning to end the game at 16-10. The Mavs out-hit the Millers 20-13. Medicine Hat had three hitters, Roth, Uzawa and Adam Vulcano tally two hits and two RBIs. Johnny Vulcano had three hits and scored four times in his second game back from injury. The Mavs (28-17) are back at Athletic Park on Friday, hosting the Regina Red Sox for a double header. The first game gets underway at 5 p.m., the second is slated for 7:05 p.m. They will don their alternate identity, The Gas City Baby Spreys, for both games. It’s the final night they’ll wear the alternate jerseys that pay homage to the franchises’ history with the Toronto Blue Jays and the resident Ospreys that live at the park. 18
