The leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, has some company on the Battle River-Crowfoot Aug. 18 by-election ballot. In fact, he has a lot of company. Besides Poilievre, Grant Abraham, United Party of Canada; Michael Harris Confirmed Libertarian Party of Canada and Jeff Willerton of the Christian Heritage Party of Canada are running to represent the riding which features an area of 52,589 km2 with a combined population of 110,212. It includes much of Special Areas which is southeast Alberta just north of Medicine Hat. However, besides this quartet of candidates there are no less 103 confirmed candidates listed as running as Independents as of 5 p.m. July 18. See http://www.electionscanada.com to see the complete list of names. All but two of these Independent have the same official agent, Tomas Szuchewycz. Szuchewycz is a member of the Longest Ballot Committee which is a movement which is protesting the current electoral system. Poilievre was without a seat in Parliament after losing his Carleton riding. He represented the Ottawa area for two decades but lost in the April federal election. Damien Kurek who initially was voted in as Battle-River Crowfoot MP stepped down and Poilievre decided to run. 7
