The Medicine Hat Mavericks hit ’em with a pair of five-spots Thursday night.

The Mavs put up 10 runs in two innings for a 12-1 win at Moose Jaw over the Millers, bouncing back from an 11-2 loss the night before in Moose Jaw. Centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. had six RBIs in the win, with a grand slam and a two-run single to propel the Mavs’ offence.

Neither team scored in the first three innings with just three hits split between the two clubs. From there, the Mavs offence kicked into overdrive in the fourth inning.

A pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Mavs with two outs in the frame. Freeman Jr. stepped up to the plate and plated a pair with a single. Aaron Vulcano drew a walk to re-load the bases for his brother Johnny who belted a double, clearing the bases for a 5-0 lead.

The Mavs offence picked back up in the fifth, with a pair of singles and a walk with one out loading the bases again for Freeman Jr. This time the Chicago, Il. product went big fly, belting a grand slam for his fourth home run of the season. Third baseman Carter Roth plated outfielder Yusei Uzawa, who subbed into the game for Johnny Vulcano in the bottom of the fourth, with an RBI single.

As much success as the Mavs had at the plate, they were dealing on the mound as well. Starter Gary Dornan worked five shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks, striking out three batters. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth to preserve the lead.

Garrick Levesque threw two frames, allowing two hits and three walks, striking out a pair. Zack Hlinksy pitched in the eighth, surrendering a pair of walks and a hit, striking out a batter as the Mavs remained in control.

They kept adding to their tally. Outfielder Micah Dvorak belted a two-out home run in the top of the sixth, his fifth home run of the season. In the seventh, outfielder Adam Vulcano plated a run with a sacrifice fly for the 12-0 lead.

Tyler Cutler made his WCBL debut by taking the mound in the ninth. He loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, seeing one run score on a sacrifice fly before recording the final out of the game, preserving the win.

They out-hit the Millers 11-6 in the win.

The Mavs (26-15) host Moose Jaw on Friday at Athletic Park for both club’s final game before the WCBL all-star game on Saturday. Friday night’s contest will be the second time the Mavs will don their alternate identity, The Gas City Baby Spreys.
