Medicine Hat News A hot start for the Medicine Hat Mavericks was extinguished in a hurry Wednesday night in Moose Jaw. The Mavs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Miller Express scored nine runs in two frames en route to an 11-2 win over Medicine Hat. An RBI single from second baseman Carter Roth led off the scoring for the Mavs, followed up with a sacrifice hit off the bat of outfielder Micah Dvorak for the 2-0 lead. Medicine Hat came into the contest off a 9-5 win Tuesday at Athletic Park over the Lethbridge Bulls. Mavs’ starter Tyler Spruiell cruised through the first two innings on the mound Wednesday, allowing just one hit and two strikeouts. He ran into trouble in the third inning, loading the bases with three straight walks before Moose Jaw’s Austin Gurney scored a pair with an RBI double. A fourth walk in the inning ended Spruiell’s night with Andrew Kim taking over with the bases loaded and one out. The Millers kept the offence flowing, with a sacrifice fly to left field giving them a 3-2 lead. They scored on a single and a wild pitch to cap off the five-run inning. Moose Jaw grew their lead in the fourth, with three singles and a sacrifice ground out giving them four runs in the inning off Kim who was lifted for Ryan Harney. He recorded the final two outs as Moose Jaw led 9-2 through four innings. Spruiell was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on two hits and four walks, striking out a pair. Kim allowed four runs on five hits and a walk. Harney’s two-out outing saw him walk a batter and record a strikeout. David Heinen took the mound for the Mavs to start the fifth and he threw three innings, allowing an RBI double in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth to push Moose Jaw’s lead to 11-2. Heinen surrendered four hits and three walks, striking out one. Adam Vulcano moved from right field to the pitcher’s mound for the eighth inning, recording two quick outs before stranding a pair of walks to escape the frame on a fly out two right field. After recording four hits in the first two innings, the Mavs were held to just four hits in the last seven frames of the loss. Moose Jaw had 11 hits. The Mavs (25-15) are back at Moose Jaw on Thursday before hosting the Millers on Friday at Athletic Park. 13
