newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The Medicine Hat Police Service has released a public statement warning residents of a text message scam circulating throughout the city that states the individual has an unpaid photo radar ticket. Police say the text message appears to come from “Alberta Drive Safe,” or “Safe Roads Alberta,” and includes a fake phishing link to pay the ticket. If you do receive this text, police say do not click any link and just delete the text message and do not provide any money or personal information. In Alberta, all traffic tickets are mailed to the registered owner’s address and all payment issues are dealt with by Alberta Court and Alberta Registries. Police will not send text messages related to unpaid traffic tickets. Registered owners will receive a Notice of Conviction to their address with details on the citation and overdue payments attached to the vehicle registration. If the province does not collect a payment, the fine will be levied against the registration of the vehicle. Police also recommend visiting traffictickets.alberta.ca to check if you have any tickets that need to be paid off. Motorists can also visit alberta.ca/fines-enforement-program to further information on phishing scams that seek to collect your personal information. 10
