A Brooks RCMP officer is being hailed for their bravery after successfully relocating a rattlesnake away from a home in the County of Newell without any prior training.

On Thursday evening shortly after 7:20 p.m. RCMP received “a rather slithery call” from a resident in the County of Newell who had discovered a rattlesnake at their front door.

The snake was “very much alive, very much uninvited and in a very bad mood,” reads a press release.

Due to the timing of the call, there were no Fish and Wildlife or Peace Officers available to deal with the unwanted guest.

“Snake rastlin’ is not taught at RCMP Depot or part of our regular duties,” reads the release. “However, one brave officer stepped up – no backup, no dramatic soundtrack and retrieved the uninvited guest. Like a true wild west hero, the officer took the angry critter to the river, far away from any doorsteps.”

Stolen car flees police

In the early morning hours Thursday shortly before 3 a.m. a Mountie attempted to pull over a red single-cab pickup truck with a silver tailgate and Saskatchewan plates which was confirmed stolen from a dealership.

The truck was also pulling a flatbed trailer which was also stolen.

However, the driver fled heading eastbound on Highway 1. Officers did not pursue the driver but were able to obtain plate numbers from the truck and trailer stolen from Martin Chyrsler.

Police have not provided plate numbers publicly but are asking anyone with information on the stolen truck to contact the Brooks detachment at 403-794-4400.

Grass fire

Thursday morning shortly before 7:30 a.m. Brooks Fire Department and RCMP received a call of a fire in the field behind the Walmart location.

As fire crews extinguished the blaze, officers noticed copper wire inside a culvert, which has been gathered for evidence.

No further details have been released, however police say an investigation is ongoing.
