The Sunny Escapes series is all about connecting you with the known – and lesser known- destinations you and your family can enjoy this summer. As you continue to discover new favourites, don’t overlook Lake Newell.
What is Lake Newell?
Lake Newell is a provincial gem located near the town of Brooks in southeastern Alberta. Its main feature is an expansive man-made lake that provides a backdrop for outdoor activities and water sports. It’s a family-friendly spot and a favourite among locals and tourists alike.
However, Lake Newell is more than just a pretty sight. It plays an essential role in both Alberta’s history and its ecosystem. Today it serves as a beloved spot for leisure and also an important resource for irrigation and wildlife conservation. It is one of Alberta’s largest and warmest manmade lakes.
Lake Newell wouldn’t exist without a bit of human ingenuity. Back in the early 20th century, water management was a pressing issue in the arid regions of Alberta. To solve this, the Canadian government and local settlers developed plans to build a massive reservoir.
Completed in 1914, Lake Newell was created by damming the Bow River through the construction of the Bassano Dam.
Initially, the lake was built to provide water for agricultural irrigation, helping to transform the surrounding dry plains into fertile farmland. Over time, it evolved into a hub for recreation, attracting visitors from around the region and beyond.
Why Should You Visit Lake Newell Park?
Lake Newell offers a unique mix of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty. Here are just a few reasons why it should earn a spot on your summer getaway list:
