A local police officer has been arrested for obstructing justice in a more than two-year investigation being conducted by the Edmonton Police Service following complaints from a former Medicine Hat Police Service employee in 2023.

Criminal charges are pending against Const. Noel Darr after the officer was arrested Monday , and he is also being investigated by Police Service Regulation members for the alleged criminal conduct that was reported to police in February 2023.

Darr was released and is scheduled to appear before court Aug. 27.

According to the Medicine Hat Police Service, Darr, who was a member of the service’s traffic unit as of 2024, is currently away from work in an unrelated matter. The Office of the Chief can revive his duty status following a review of investigative materials from the Professional Standards Branch.

Police are not releasing any further details as the matter is now before the court.

Fleeing driver arrested

Harley German, 18, of Medicine Hat, has been arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle and flight from an officer after speeding away from police during a traffic stop last month.

During the earlier morning hours on June 29 a service patrol member attempted to conduct a stop on a vehicle that did not have a licence plate. Once police activated the emergency lights, German responded by accelerating from police at a high rate of speed, driving through a red light.

Fifteen minutes later, around 4:30 a.m., police located the vehicle downtown where it was seen dropping off a passenger. Police arrested the passenger, and German once again fled away at a high rate of speed, though due to safety concerns police did not pursue the vehicle.

The following day on June 30, police identified German, who was arrested at his home without incident.

German was held for a bail hearing and further released, and is scheduled to appear before court on Aug. 7.
