newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Some public school fees for extracurriculars, field trips, activities and sports will see an increase in the upcoming school year due to rising costs in transportation, food and supplies. The Medicine Hat Public School Division is also introducing several new programs and academies for students this fall. School trustees approved the fee increases in June that will apply in the upcoming school year and will affect optional programming that includes drama presentations, ski trips, sports clubs and academies. Parents and guardians of student athletes can expect to see a variety of increases to fees attached to these activities. Medicine Hat High Hawks wrestlers and volleyball players will see an increased cost to the program due to increased transportation, hotel costs as well as additional bus trips. Alexandra Middle School will see an increase for athletes on the Basketball Boys A team due to an increase in tournament, travel and hotel costs. Ski and outdoor education trips will also cost slightly more for students at George Davison School and Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre due to transportation costs. The increased cost of material will also have an effect on several programs at Alexandra Middle School including construction, cosmetology, drama and food studies as well as the school’s mountain bike club. Food studies programs at both Crescent Heights and Medicine Hat high schools will also increase slightly due to the increase in food costs. Dr. Ken Sauer School will offer a new running club in the fall at the cost of $10. Medicine Hat Christian School will introduce a new Performing Arts Academy. Vincent Massey School is also planning a year end trip to Elkwater for students at the cost of $10. Alexandra Middle School is introducing several new academies in the new school year that include construction, foods, multimedia, robotics, coding, art and drama. Crescent Heights High School is also planning to introduce a new instrumental music course at the cost of $20. 15
