The Medicine Hat Public Library is inviting residents of all ages out to see the mightiest machines on the city streets this Saturday for the annual Big Truck Day.

The Big Marble Go Centre will host a series of large vehicles and offer a chance to learn about all the different machines, starting at 11 a.m.

The parking lot will be filled with close to a dozen trucks of all shapes and sizes, including a grader, a bulldozer, a back hoe and a street sweeper from the City of Medicine Hat.

Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services will have a fire truck present and Medicine Hat Police Service will be there with its armoured rescue vehicle. Staff from each organization will be there to show people around the vehicle, explain what they do and how they work. There may even be opportunities to sit inside some of them.

“I got to go around and sit in the fire truck and the armoured police vehicle and a bunch of the construction vehicles,” said Miranda Leduc, adult and community librarian. “And it is very cool. I thought it wouldn’t be, but it was very cool to go and actually sit and see how high up they sit and all the different buttons and stuff in them.”

Leduc is one of the organizers for the event and she, alongside youth services library assistant Karla Gaetz, stressed the importance of the community getting to see the different vehicles that operate in the city and learn what they do on the roads or in emergency situations.

They also highlighted that this is not merely a children’s event, but for anyone with an enthusiasm or curiosity for the subject.

“I feel like people think it’s targeted towards kids, and I guess it is because kids are going to think, ‘Oh, big trucks. Let’s go see them.’ But I’ve been speaking to some adults and they seem very keen on coming to check out the construction vehicles, police vehicle and firetruck,” said Leduc. “To be honest, when we were at the fire station, the firefighters were very excited about the police armoured truck. So I think everybody just really likes big trucks.”

For little fans of big trucks aged 4-6, there will be a Big Truck Day Storytime with truck-themed stories and songs at 10:30 a.m. Those interested can register their child on the MHPL website.

There will also be four food trucks, Loaded Cravings, Pickelo Kitchens, Millie’s Sodas & Sweets and D.L. Snack Shack there to keep people fuelled at the lunchtime event.

More trucks may be added before July 5, so residents are encouraged to visit and see what all the Big Marble Go Parking lot will have in store.
