Mavs fall 9-1 Wednesday to split road series with Sylvan Lake

The Medicine Hat Mavericks need a beach getaway after Wednesday’s loss at Sylvan Lake.

The Mavs allowed seven runs through four innings to fall 9-1 to the Gulls, splitting the first two games of the six-game road trip through the West division. They beat the Gulls 3-2 on Tuesday, holding onto a 3-2 lead for seven innings.

A clean first inning for both teams sped the game through a downpour of rain in Sylvan Lake before the Gulls offence provided their own rain,

They grabbed a run in the bottom of the second on a two-out, fielders choice play. The Gulls added two more run sin the bottom of the second inning with a two-run shot off the bat of centre fielder Noah Konings.

Sylvan Lake ended Mavs’ starter Gary Dornan’s night by loading the bases to start the fourth inning. Garrick Levesque took over on the bump and the Gulls chipped away for a 7-0 lead. A pair of sacrifice flies was followed up by a walk and a two-run double to finish the frame.

Dornan was charged with the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks, recording one strikeout. Levesque threw another frame, finishing with two runs against (one earned) on a hit and three walks. The Gulls scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on a fielders choice groundout.

The Mavs got on the board in the top of the sixth inning.

Centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr. led off the frame with a single, moving up to second a batter later on a single from third baseman Tyler Vanneste. He moved to third on a sac fly to centre field before scoring on an RBI single up the middle off the bat of shortstop Johnny Vulcano, making it an 8-1 game.

Ryan Harney took over on the mound for the Mavs to start the sixth inning, his first outing with Medicine Hat. He worked three frames, allowing one run on three hits, recording a strikeout. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning, making an early impression in the red and white.

Sylvan Lake’s final run came in the eighth inning on an RBI double for the 9-1 final score. The Gulls outhit the Mavs 8-5, Medicine Hat committed three errors to Sylvan Lake’s lone blunder.

The Mavs (18-11) are off to Fort McMurray tomorrow to face the Giants tomorrow for the first of a two-game set.
