On Friday the Medicine Hat Public School Division shared the story of animal lover and student Saydee, who recently completed her first year of Veterinary Technicians dual-credit course at Olds College, located north of Calgary, and has aspirations of becoming a veterinarian and possibly opening her own clinic.

According to a story posted online, Saydee attended an introduction session during the summer between Grade 10 and 11.

“It was clear to me that this was a pathway I needed to explore,” she said. “I’ve always loved being outside, in nature.”

Saydee says her love of animals connects to her childhood, visiting her aunt’s ranch.

“Spending time with so many animals was just amazing.”

In Grade 11 Saydee took an introduction to psychology program, part of the dual-credit program. This year as a senior, she travelled back and forth to Olds College to participate in an intensive eight-month veterinary technician course.

Although some of the programming was delivered online, Saydee was required to spend at least five hours a week at Olds College, completing weekly studies as well as monthly practicums.

“We’d drive up at 3 a.m. to be there by 9 a.m., and stay until 4 p.m. It was a long day, but I never wanted to leave,” said Saydee, who also has a part-time job and plays competitive baseball.

During the practicum Saydee was taught how to use surgical instruments and provide animal care, as well as bond with fellow classmates and the animals.

“It’s like a community. We all share a love for science and animals. I felt like I fit in perfectly,” said Saydee, who adds, “Hanging out in the kennels with puppies and kittens was the best part.”

The hands-on experience also provided valuable lessons that can’t be taught in a classroom. Saydee recalls a moment during one of her exams where she had forgotten to remove a ring she was wearing on her finger and it got caught on a sterile glove.

“That moment really stuck with me. It taught me how important it is to plan ahead and listen to the people guiding you,” said Saydee.

“Saydee grasped the concepts and fundamentals of science with ease,” one of her science teachers said. “Whether measuring chemicals, holding instruments, dissecting an eyeball or sheep’s brain, Saydee loves all the hands-on stuff,” stating this dual-credit program fits well within her wheelhouse.

Next semester, the high school graduate will attend the final science courses through Coulee Collegiate, at no cost, and is expected to be a full certified vet technician by January.

Although the travel time was extensive, transportation was the only cost to Saydee’s family, as all course fees and textbooks are covered by MHPSD.
