The Weyburn Beavers threw the final punch in a back-and-forth, pitchers duel Tuesday night against the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

The Beavers walked off the Mavs in the ninth inning with a bases-loaded, sacrifice fly off the bat of two-way player Ian Heck. The second-year Beaver threw six innings on the mound for Weyburn, allowing a lone run on five hits and two walks, striking out 10 batters before recording the game winning RBI in the ninth.

Medicine Hat struck first in the game, with a sacrifice fly off the bat of centre fielder Jeremy Freeman Jr in the top of the third inning. Freeman Jr. scored catcher Jaden Babiuk who led off the inning with a single, moving up to second on a fielders choice play and then third base on an error.

The Mavs and Beavers each failed to score on bases loaded opportunities in the middle of the game, with the Beavers loading the bases in the third and the Mavs in the fourth.

Medicine Hat starter Danny Retzlaff held the Beavers at bay through four innings, allowing just one run and five walks, striking out nine batters. He was lifted in the bottom of the fifth after allowing an inning-opening walk, with Diego Centella taking over on the bump.

Weyburn tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth on an error from Centella, he hit a runner at first base on a pickoff attempt, letting a runner score from third.

That was the only blemish for Centella who threw three innings, allowing the lone run on two hits and a walk, striking out two batters.

The Mavs grabbed a lead in the seventh with an RBI single from Carter Roth, tying the WCBL lead with 25 RBIs on the season.

A.J. Doll took over on the mound for the Mavs t0 start the eighth inning. A leadoff single from Trevor Dale put a Beaver on base to start the frame. He moved up to second base on a passed ball and then to third on a groundout, scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field for the 2-2 score.

The Beavers called game in the ninth off a pair of pair of hits. Alex Alva recorded a pinch hit single and stole second base ahead of a walk by Luke Malzewski. Noah Brooks beat out an infield single, loading the bases for Heck. He took a first-pitch ball before driving a pitch to centre field, deep enough to score Alva from third base for the Weyburn win.

Medicine Hat outhit the Beavers 7-6 in the loss, both teams committed an error. Medicine Hat came into the contest, the first of a six-game stretch, riding a four-game win streak. The Mavs (15-7) are back at Weyburn on Wednesday for the second of a two-game road trip before four straight games at Athletic Park.
