newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com A 37-year-old man has been charged with robbery and mischief under $5,000 after he was taken into custody by police following a dispute with his roommate last Friday afternoon. Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 000-block of Second Street SE just before 1 p.m. after the male, who was in the process of moving from the residence, was accused of taking property belonging to his roommate. An argument broke out between the roommates and the accused man armed himself with a bat and allegedly assaulted the other and damaged property in the home. The man underwent a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and was freed on a release order. He is scheduled to appear before court on July 23. Police training Last month, four members of the Medicine Hat Police Service underwent specialized training, members of the Police Commission heard during the last general meeting it will hold until September. Two officers attended a workshop held in Calgary addressing the topics of officer safety during child sex offender investigations. The Child Sex Offenders and the Impacts to Officers Safety workshop was held by the Calgary Police Service. A police constable travelled to Regina to attend the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment Conference, which provided useful tools to process trauma. “This speaks to some of the in-house training that we do with regard to wellness for our members,” explains Insp. Joe West. “One of our constables who looks after our peer-support systems went to that conference.” Some of the topics covered include current trends in employee mental health, strategies for peer support and engaging with people who are off-duty sick. Another office was also able to attend a trauma related course held at Medicine Hat College in May called the Traumatic Events System course. “The course helps attendees understand the human systems in response to trauma, so this speaks towards trauma-informed practices that our family crimes unit is using when they are interviewing, when they are dealing with families and so fourth,” said West. “Again, it just gives an example of the depth that some of our speciality units have when it comes to dealing with those types of investigations. 15
