After retiring, Gary continued to be busy golfing, skiing and running, as well caring for his small apartment building. One of his favourite jobs was being a lifty at Hidden Valley Ski hill when he was in his 70’s; he laughed at being the old guy at the ski hill. VALERIE JEAN HALLADAY
VALERIE JEAN HALLADAY October 26, 1946 June 5, 2025
With deep love and respect, we announce the passing of Valerie Jean Halladay (née Rice) on June 5, 2025, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She was 78.
Born in Lethbridge on October 26, 1946, Val was the eldest child of Ruth Ririe and Wesley Rice. Val grew up in and around the small town of Magrath. She spent the first several years of her life on the farm. She loved picking wildflowers and spending time with the animals. She was a great student, and in high school, she joined the ranks of the cheerleading squad. After graduation, Val attended the nursing program at Brigham Young University. She graduated in August of 1966, and so began a lifelong career in nursing. Val was a very well respected and well-loved Nurse on 4 West at the Medicine Hat Hospital, where she spent the majority of her career.
Val married the love of her life, John Halladay, on June 14, 1975. They raised three boys together, Jerry, Lindsey and Nathan. Val loved spending time on the acreage down in Paramatta Valley. She spent most of her free time outside tending her vegetable garden, fruit trees and flowers. She loved canning and home preparedness and was so generous with the produce that the acreage produced.
In December 1997, Val and John became grandparents and as the saying goes, something magical happens when parents turn into grandparents. Val loved being a grandma and her grandkids could tell. She supported them in sports, music and anything that they did. She loved cooking for them and making sure that everyone was happy and healthy.
Val was also known for her beautiful petit point, amazing and cozy quilts that each one of her boys and grandchildren were the recipients of, as well as her love of basketball. She would quote stats and players names with anyone who shared the same interest. Val was a devoted member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved attending the temple in Cardston. In 2023, Val and John made the move into town, and they enjoyed life at River Ridge Seniors Village. Val’s life changed drastically last summer when she lost John. She missed him dearly and is now reunited with her “big guy.”

GARRY HESCH
GARRY HESCH 1956 ~ 2025
We lost our beloved Garry on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025, after a short battle with cancer. Garry was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more whose lives he touched.
Garry was born the youngest of four children and spent his formative years on the family farm north of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Garry married his high school sweetheart, Michelle, on October 16th, 1976, and was blessed with one daughter, Karly.
A jack-of-all-trades, Garry worked in many careers throughout his lifetime. His background in construction served as the foundation for his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone, for any project, at any time. Early in his career, Garry studied drafting technology at Lethbridge College, later transitioning into the oil industry in Calgary and Medicine Hat. His passion for learning led him to study business at Medicine Hat College, followed by a successful career as a partner at Cypress Insurance. Thirteen years ago, Garry and Michelle retired to pursue their passion for travel. This led them on many memorable adventures in North America, Central America, Europe, and Oceania, collecting memories and stories that they treasured and would share often. Notable highlights include motoring around Canada, winters spent in Mexico, and their recent trip to visit Karly and Nik in Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia.
Garry dedicated countless hours to the community, coaching Michelle’s ball team and Karly’s ringette team. He loved a good game of golf with great friends, camping, boating, fishing, and skiing, especially for many memorable years at the Fernie cabin. Those who knew Garry will remember him for his love of a great Caesar, a thrilling game of cribbage, and his favourite pastime, spending time with family and friends.
Garry’s life is celebrated by his wife of 48 years, Michelle Hesch (nee Tetrault); daughter, Karly Hesch (Nik Dean); brother, Rick Hesch (Carole Wickenheiser); sister, Dianne (Brian) VanSandt; sister-in-law, Lise Tetrault (Linda Mulhall); brothers-in-law, Guy (Donna) Tetrault, Rob (Betty) Tetrault, Alain (Gail) Tetrault, Denis (Marie) Tetrault, Don (Brenda) Tetrault, as well as dear friends, relatives, and colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents, Ivan and Hazel (nee Hermanson) Hesch; his sister, Sharon (Peter) Leggett; his mother and father-in-law, Yvon and Laurette (nee Roy) Tetrault, as well as grandparents, relatives, and friends.
We ask that you remember Garry not for the way his life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Please join us for a celebration of life on Thursday, June 12th, at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E. with Fr. Iqbal Khurshid celebrant. There will be a eulogy read for Garry at 12:45 p.m. followed by mass at 1:00 p.m. and then a luncheon. Livestream will begin at 12:40 p.m. Those who wish to attend virtually, please visit Garry’s obituary page on our website, for the link.
