newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Residents will have the opportunity to get up close and personal to Medicine Hat Police Service’s armoured vehicle, drones, various police vehicles and members of the service during the annual MHPS open house Saturday. Various units, including tactical team and forensic identification team members will be on hand to interact with members of the community as well as the service’s two victim assistance facility dogs, Athena and Glory as well as the services K-9 team. “Gives the police service a chance to say thank you to the public,” says Sgt. Adam Gregory. “We invite the public in and to see all the excellent hard work that we’re doing and all our specialized training and equipment.” The open house, which runs outside the police station from 11:00 a.m to 3 p.m. will also include building tours as well as a charity barbecue with funds raised supporting the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association. “Just giving a little glimpse of some of the specialty units we have and what we do,” says Gregory. “At different times throughout the event, we’re going to have some building tours that’ll be conducted by the Office of the Chief, so the chief and deputy inspectors will be present and leading people through the police building and giving tours.” A highlight of the annual open house is the presentation of the Chief Earl Leadership Legacy Fund scholarship that recognizes 22 Grade 6 students, one from each school in Medicine Hat, who demonstrates the core values of the service, integrity, respect, courage and accountability. “We’ll have a presentation by the chief and myself and a member of the Earl family and a member of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, and we get a chance to present them with a certificate, a cheque, a Dairy Queen gift certificate and some other little goodies,” explains Gregory. Funds from the charity barbecue run by the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association directly support the Chief Earl Legacy Fund scholarship. Volunteers will be serving a burger, pop and bag of chips for $6 during the open house. Building tours are scheduled for 11 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. 11
