Fire crews tackle garage blaze preventing damage to residence

Medicine Hat firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire in a garage in the Saamis Heights area Friday night and were able to prevent it from spreading into the home.

Shortly after 10:15 p.m. crews were called to blaze and were on scene within six minutes. Upon arrival fire crews discovered heavy smoke coming from a garage and initiated an attack to extinguish the fire before it could further spread, limiting damage to the home.

A search confirmed that all residents had safely evacuated the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On a social media post Monday, firefighters reminded homeowners that closed doors can save lives by limiting the spread of fire and smoke.

“In this case. The interior door between the garage and house was closed, helping contain the fire,” reads the post.
