AHS reminds public to be safe with water, food as outdoor season ramps up

By Medicine Hat News on May 16, 2025.

As the weather for outdoor activities improves, Alberta Health Services is reminding Albertans to be safe this year with their food and water.

Water from natural sources, such as lakes, rivers or streams, should never be assumed safe to drink. This water can contain bacteria, viruses and parasites, which can make any individual sick, especially those with compromised immune systems, young children, pregnant women and older adults.

Residents should only use water that is safe for human consumption, such as bottled water or water provided by water systems approved by Alberta Environments and Protected Area or Environmental Public Health. Filtering, boiling and certain chemical treatments can make water from natural sources safe if necessary.

In order to likewise avoid foodborne illness, AHS recommends washing hands thoroughly before handling food, sanitizing any surfaces or utensils that come into contact with raw meat and washing produce prior to consumption.

When camping or otherwise engaged in outdoor activity, store food in durable airtight containers to help keep pests and animals away, and with ice packs to keep them cold if needed. It’s recommended to never bring food into your tent or sleeping areas.

Common symptoms of foodborne or untreated water-related illnesses include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. Some more severe illnesses can cause high fever.

Most of the time, illnesses are mild and go away after a few days with plenty of fluids and rest. If symptoms are not improving, or there is severe vomiting or diarrhea, residents should contact their health-care provider, or call HealthLink at 811.

Those with suspected foodborne illnesses should report to Health Link at 811, visit AHS.ca/eph, or call 1-833-476-4743. A public health inspector may contact them to help prevent others from getting sick.
