Following numerous reports of stolen vehicles, as well as thefts from vehicles in Brooks in 2025, RCMP have provided residents with a list of crime prevention tools and tips to help reduce the risk of auto theft within the community.

Police say opportunist thieves often target vehicles left unlocked or with keys still in the ignition.

“Once a vehicle is stolen, it may be dismantled for parts, or shipped overseas, or even resold within Alberta using a falsified vehicle identification number, putting unsuspecting buyers at risk,” reads the public service announcement.

RCMP are advising residents to always make sure to lock vehicles and never leave keys, garage door openers, or important documents with personal identifying information in your vehicle.

“Ensure all valuables are removed or out of sight. This includes shopping bags, loose change, sunglasses and any electric,” the statement says.

Police also suggest parking vehicles in a locked garage when possible, or in well lit areas and within sight.

“If you’re unable to park in a locked garage, keep outdoor lights on for added security.”

Police also suggest motorists instal anti-theft and vehicle tracking devices.
