Electoral Boundaries Commission will hold public meetings in southeast Alberta this June

@MedicineHatNews The commission that will evaluate the layout of Alberta’s provincial ridings ahead of the next election has scheduled two meetings in southeast Alberta next month. The Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission convenes every two elections to examine and potentially redraw districts to balance population and consider other factors. It will begin public meetings in late May, and has scheduled a meeting in Medicine Hat on Friday, June 13, from 9 a.m. until noon. It will sit at the Heritage Inn in Brooks the previous afternoon on June 12. Those wishing to make a presentation to the commission are asked to register at the body’s website (www.abebc.ca). Written submissions are also being received until May 23. The process is tasked with adding two new ridings, bringing the total number to 89, and adjusting boundaries of others to accomplish that. The process in 2017 created the redrawn constituencies of Brooks-Medicine Hat and Cypress-Medicine Hat from the previous Medicine Hat, Cypress and Brooks-Strathmore ridings. This spring, the public process begins with two meetings in Pincher Creek and Lethbridge in the morning and evening, respectively, on May 29, before the commission travels to Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Drumheller and northern Alberta, before concluding hearings in Red Deer on June 19. The commission is required to present a first draft of proposed changes before a further set of public meetings. 11-10
