Alberta RCMP is reminding motorcyclists and other motorists to be aware of each other on roadways as motorcycle season has arrived.

Typically southeast Alberta riders are able to hit the streets in April and May, weather permitting, and with more bikes on the road police are looking to prevent collisions with a list of recommended safety tips for the season.

Police are reminding riders perform pre-ride checks like fluids, tires, lights, singles, chains and overall condition of the motorcycle before hitting the road. Alberta Transportation provides a Rider’s Guide for a checklist.

Riders must wear helmets and meet the minimum safety requirements while riding that includes a proper coat, pants, boots that cover the ankles and gloves, and police recommend wearing shatter-proof eyewear to reduce the risk of injury.

Always stay in sight of larger vehicles and avoid blind spots. Police recommend wearing a high visibility jacket and helmet in colours like orange, yellow or white to help alert other motorists.

Police say it’s important to maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles and stay clear of loose gravel or rocks thrown by other vehicles on roadways.

“Be cautious as excess debris and sand may affect tire traction and overall handling,” reads a press release.

RCMP also reminded motorcyclists avoid weaving lanes and speeding in and out of traffic, as it is both illegal and dangerous, and increases the risk of collision.

Last year within the provincial RCMP jurisdiction police responded to 204 collisions involving injuries with a motorcycle, and 26 collisions with a motorcycle causing death.

“Last May saw 37 motorcycle collisions,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Let’s ensure this riding season is a safe one. If you’re in a vehicle, make sure to complete a full check before turning or changing lanes to ensure smaller vehicles or motorcycles are not in your path.”
