asmith@medicinehatnews.com Wetlands are one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, and the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is looking to introduce residents to one living right in our backyard. On May 13 starting at 1 p.m, join a park interpreter to learn about the local wetland in Kin Coulee park for a talk and physical activity. Attendees will meet at the Kinette Picnic Shelter to discuss the coulee, the plants that grow alongside it and how they affect the landscape. “We will discuss what is in the water itself, what is native, and what has been introduced by people. We will identify the local flora and fauna, then perform a ‘pond dip’ with see-through Tupperware and examine what we find,” said Rhys Mah Poy, park interpreter. While respecting the wildlife, participants will inspect the insects and other creatures they may encounter in this activity. Those attending are advised to bring bug spray, clothes and shoes they don’t mind potentially getting dirty or wet and sunscreen. This program has no cost associated, but does require pre-registration, and spots are limited. For more information on this or any other program, or to register, residents can call the Nature Line at 403-529-6225. 8
