OTTAWA AND MEDICINE HAT —

Conservative MP Damien Kurek is set to step aside to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run in a byelection in the Battle River—Crowfoot riding in Alberta, just north of Medicine Hat’s electoral district.

The Conservatives boosted their total votes and seats during the General Election that concluded Monday, but failed to prevent a Liberal minority government and Poilievre lost his own seat in the Ottawa area.

A release from the party on Friday morning states that Kurek, who was re-elected in his eastern Alberta riding, will resign to make way for the CPC leader to earn a seat and return to the House of Commons.

At a press conference earlier in the day, Prime Minister Mark Carney said there would be no delays in calling a byelection should it be needed. There is no immediate timetable for such a byelection, which would typically involve a four- to six-week campaign period. The House of Commons will be recalled on May 26.

Poileivre grew up in south Calgary, but represented the riding of Carleton since the early 2000s. Kurek was first elected in 2019 after winning the nomination to replace long-time MP Kevin Sorenson.

Those two Conservative candidates have never failed to win more than 70 per cent of the votes in the riding. Kurek was re-elected this week by 82 per cent and a 46,000 vote margin.

The Battle River-Crowfoot district is bordered to the south by Medicine Hat-Cardston Warner at the Cypress County Line.

The Red Deer River separates it from the riding of Bow River (Brooks, Taber and Strathmore), and it extends north to near the Yellowhead Highway between Edmonton and Lloydminster.

It includes Special Areas centres of Hanna and Oyen, Acadia Valley, Drumheller, Stettler, Camrose, and Wainwright.

More to come.
