A plan to build a new substation and upgrade power lines in Medicine Hat’s southwest quadrant has been approved by provincial utility regulators.

The station, designated MHS-11, would handle the flow of power from connection at the river valley power complex, south to the station near Highway 3’s entrance to the city, then east to the south end.

A similar proposal in 2022 was denied by the Alberta Utilities Commission, but last week an AUC decision gave approval to a new site, located on Range Road 63, one-half mile north of Township Road 122 (west of Gershaw Drive).

City energy administrators pointed to a potential decision soon at a April 24 committee meeting, stating no opponents registered to discuss the new proposal.

“We’re ready to move forward with construction as soon as we have approval,” said division managing director Pat Bohan.

“Having sat at the table with this for a few years now, that’s exciting news,” said Coun. Alison Van Dyke.

The city began searching for sites five years ago and eventually fell upon a spot inside city limits, but across from a Cypress County subdivision where property owners opposed the potential of the energy infrastructure site.

A secondary location, north of S. Boundary Road, drew concern from Desert Blume residents, and eventually both were declined as the AUC ruled the city hadn’t proven its case that the additional power management was needed.

A new application outlined demand growth expectations in the south end, as well as argued the equipment would improve reliability across the city.

The $22-million project was approved in the 2023-24 city budget.

Power-line upgrades connecting the power plant and the substation, and then the new substation to another station in South Ridge, were approved at the same time.
