Mature students and graduates interested in completing or upgrading high school courses can register on May 1 for in-person lessons taught by an instructor at Medicine Hat College.

The program is designed to allow mature students an opportunity to receive in-person education delivered in a post-secondary setting. Applicants are asked to call 403-526-4156 for registration details.

The Coulee Collegiate school is a partnership between the Medicine Hat Public School Division, Prairie Rose School Division and MHC, offering distance learning and in-person high school courses.

It was previously known as Beyond Walls and operates all year on the third floor of the campus above the Vera Bracken Library.

Catholic schools to participate in Mental Health Week

Beginning next Monday students attending Catholic schools in Medicine Hat will be participating in daily dress-up themed activities for Mental Health Week, May 5-9.

To start the week students will be encouraged to dress as their favourite superhero or wear red Monday for Superhero or Red Day. On Tuesday, students are asked to travel back in time and wear tie-dye colours to promote showing feelings through bright colours.

Wednesday students are asked to wear their “silliest hat,” or favourite cap to support mental health.

On Thursday many students may be wearing Tiger orange as they are asked to wear their favourite team’s jersey and team up to support reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.

To end the week students are invited to wear their PJs to school during Stress Less Friday.

The week of themed school days follows the city-wide Move for Mental Health community fun run and walk festival that will be held outside the Medicine Hat Public Library on Sunday afternoon from 1-4 p.m.

Alberta teachers awarded bursary funding

Ten Alberta public school teachers, including recipients employed by the Lethbridge School Division, have been chosen to receive a bursary of $4,200 to support international teaching programs.

Each year the province’s International Language Teacher Bursary awards a total of $42,000 to support teachers in their efforts to build international language skills and bring them back to Alberta classrooms.

This year the 10 teachers, who have not yet been publicly announced, are expected to participate in language and culture programs in Spain, France, Ecuador, Brazil and Mexico.

“The money is helping teachers develop their language skills and cultural knowledge which will translate directly into tremendously rewarding learning experiences for Alberta students,” said Demetrios Nicolaides, minister of education.

The bursary program was established in 2003 and is funded through the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund. Recipients are chosen from a Alberta Education committee based on requirements and a statement of intent.
