Work along Sixth Avenue SE and Third Street SE will continue Tuesday, as the Downtown Utility and Surface Upgrade Project enters its final phase.

The project is expected to complete in late June, weather permitting. Access to businesses will remain open downtown throughout this construction, says the City of Medicine Hat.

The 300 block of Sixth Avenue SE, including the intersection at Fourth Avenue, will close April 22 for upgrades to the storm collection system and road structure. Motorists are asked to obey posted signage and detours.

Top-lift paving, a concrete mid-block crossing, select sidewalk replacements, pavement markings and landscaping will begin with off-road work in April along Third Street SE. Any work that will require road closures will proceed once Sixth Avenue rehabilitation is complete.

During construction, the City of Medicine Hat will offer 20 free public parking spaces in the Transit Terminal Parkade, which will still be accessible from Fourth Avenue.

Two transit boarding locations will be impacted during construction, with Route 11 boarding where Route 22 usually boards, and Route 22 boarding in the southeast corner of the terminal, along the adjacent alleyway. Signage will be on site for affected riders.

“The City of Medicine Hat would like to thank residents and business owners for their patience and understanding while the remainder of work on this vital infrastructure improvement project is completed,” said the city, adding that they “look forward to upgrading this 100-year old infrastructure to ensure a reliable utility network for decades to come.”
