newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Brooks RCMP say they have arrested a male youth in relation to a potential threat at Brooks Composite High School, which was placed under immediate lockdown Monday while police searched the premises. At approximately 8:25 a.m. on Monday, police received a report of the potential threat at the high school and responded by completing a thorough search of the premises, finding no threat. During this time students were placed under lockdown procedures that are taken to prevent threats or intruders from gaining access into school buildings and preventing them from moving through the building. While the investigation progressed revealing that there was no direct threat to the school, lockdown procedures upgraded to hold and secure procedures that allow classes to resume as scheduled. However, police say their investigation did involve students from the school and one male youth was arrested at his residence in Tilley. According to Grasslands Public Schools, reports circulating on social media suggesting an individual with a weapon on school premises are false. “We want to reassure families that at no point was there an individual with a weapon on any school premises,” writes superintendent Scott Brandt in a letter to parents and guardians. “We understand that events like this can be concerning for families. Please know that the safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority,” says Brandt. “As part of our commitment to school safety, our staff followed established protocols.” As precautionary measures the school division also placed Eastbrook Elementary School, Brooks Junior High School and Sunrise School under hold and secure due to the RCMP presence in the area at the time. The investigation remains ongoing. 12
