asmith@medicinehatnews.com The Alberta NDP released a statement Monday urging MLAs to vote in favour of a fully independent public inquiry regarding the current investigation into the province’s health-care procurement practices. “The UCP government is interfering in the Auditor General’s investigation of the ‘CorruptCare’ scandal by issuing gag orders on public servants. They are also misleading Albertans about the work of the Auditor General. This is deeply troubling,” said Sarah Hoffman, Alberta’s New Democrat shadow minister for health. The statement follows another released April 10 by Irfan Sabir, the NDP’s justice critic, which spoke on the contents of a leaked email, which he said was, “directing thousands of staff to not respond to the Auditor General or provide information and instead forward them to a lawyer.” “Contrary to the government’s claims, the Auditor General has assured Albertans it is not standard procedure for an external law firm to intervene in interviews with government staff.” said Hoffman. Hoffman urged representatives to support a motion for an independent inquiry, stating that “Albertans deserve better.” 7
