No public forums for candidates planned prior to election

Voters in the Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner riding will not have the opportunity to attend a public debate between candidates running in the general election.

The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce does not have any plans on hosting a public forum before voters hit the polls on April 28.

Previously the Chamber has held moderated election forms for candidates running in local riding for municipal, provincial and federal elections.

This platform allows candidates to express and debate their positions on issues crucial in front of voters.

“These kinds of gatherings can be a great opportunity to hear directly from candidates,” says Jocelyn Johnson with the NDP, who expressed her interest in attending a local forum to debate against fellow candidates Glen Motz of the Conservatives and Liberal Tom Rooke, as well as Andy Shadrack representing the Green Party of Canada.

However, Johnson says voters can share their concerns to candidates by phone or email.

“A way for all residents to ask specific questions and talk one-to-one with those seeking to represent them. I’ve heard a lot of people seeking answers to policy questions and I always welcome those questions. The absence of a public forum is unfortunate but does not limit the option of contacting candidates directly,” said Johnson.

Other candidates in the riding did not respond to requests for comment by press time. Only Motz and Rooke currently live in the riding.

Why is the newspaper still publishing tp/to submissions with mainly proliberal anticonservative content (always surprising considering 80% of the locals vote conservative) after stating they wouldn’t publish political commentary during an election?

What Conservatives? Canada has never had a good Conservative government since 1990. When people vote, and claim they are voting for Conservatives, they aren’t voting for Conservatives at all. There is nothing Conservative about these Conservative parties in Alberta, or in Canada.
