Preparations are underway for the upcoming CARO art sale, which will provide funding for those in need in Africa.

Canadians Reaching Out to the World’s Children is a Medicine Hat-based charity which supports Teega Wende, an orphanage in Burkina Faso, West Africa. This year, they thought to try something new for their annual major fundraiser, selling a mix of contemporary art from Africa as well as pieces from local artists.

“The works here really span almost a century of Medicine Hat talent,” said CARO president Nancy Cocks. “We have photography, we have paintings, we have pottery … and we also have a lot of contemporary pieces from Africa as well.”

Cocks said the event is more than just a fundraiser, it’s also an opportunity to bask in the arts and culture of not just the city but on the other side of the world, as well.

The works donated by local artists are also being sold at a lower rate than many of them sell out of their studios, making this a good opportunity to both support a good cause and get new artwork.

The sale will take place April 5 from 1-4 p.m. in St. John’s Church Hall. Live music and refreshments will also be available for those who attend.

“We hope that even people who might not be planning to buy something should still come and have a look and a cup of coffee, and you never know what might just grab your heart,” said Cocks.
