Next Tuesday Medicine Hat College will be hosting a headstrong summit in collaboration with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, focusing on reducing the stigma around mental health.

The workshop was developed by the commission following a five-year research period with educators and students, and is built to inspire youth to become leaders within their schools and communities.

The educational event is also supported by The Beej Project and promotes mental wellness and seeking-help at an early age.

According to the commission approximately 70 per cent of mental illness in adults in Canada is in childhood or adolescence and says suicide deaths among young people 19 and under continue to increase globally.

“The Mental Health Commission of Canada recognizes that young people bring great passion, courage, and empathy to efforts to tackle important social issues,” reads the program’s website.

The summit that runs during the morning on March 25 will welcome local students in Grades 7-9, and college students are invited to attend the workshop’s keynote address from deputy fire chief Douglas Gill with Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services.

The keynote address is planned for approximately half an hour beginning at 9:45 a.m. in the college theatre. Additionally there will be a resource fair in the college’s atrium beginning at noon.
