New build permits slow in February, still on yearly average

New building permits in Medicine Hat slowed in February but are relatively even with early 2024, according to new figures released by the city’s planning department.

The total estimated value of approved construction projects over the first two months of 2025 was $4.7 million, about $700,000 less than the same time frame in 2024.

The difference was a larger government and institutional renovations permitted 12 months ago.

In the recent two-month period, three new single-family homes, one duplex and one tri-plex or four-plex were approved, totalling $3.2 million.

No new commercial permits were issued.

Garage and other residential applications were even, and while commercial improvements were lower at 10 projects worth $500,000, down from 15 worth $760,000 one year ago.
