Throughout the year’s shortest month, local firefighters report responding to two structure fires and 10 outside fires, as well as 28 motor vehicles accidents in the more than 200 calls for service they received in February.

The Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services also responded to 36 medical calls, 59 fire alarm calls and 28 calls related to carbon monoxide and other gases.

Last month the service put out a public call seeking historic fire and emergency service items as it celebrates its 125th Anniversary. Local firefighters are looking to display old helmets, badges, uniforms or other related items at a pair of open houses planned this summer to celebrate the occasion.

On Valentine’s Day Sparky the Fire Dog made a special visit to two classes at Elm Street School and Ecole St. John Paul II School to hand out hugs and hang out with students while delivering important fire safety messages.

Later in the month firefighters at Station No. 2 invited a kindergarten class from St. Patrick’s School to tour the fire station and were able to take part in a training course and spray the fire hose.

Despite most of the month averaging below normal temperature, local firefighters released a YouTube video highlighting the importance of ice safety as temperatures began to rise.

Local firefighters will be on hand this weekend at the Southeast Alberta Home and Leisure Trade Show that kicks off Friday at noon at the Cypress Centre.
