Four youth from Medicine Hat, who cannot be named, have been charged with several firearm related offences after they were arrested by police following the discovery of a .22 calibre rifle, as well as various replica firearms and other weapons.

Police say they launched an investigation into the group of youths after receiving information they were in possession of the firearms that were allegedly used in violent criminal activities.

On Tuesday, the Major Crimes Unit and Patrol Section along with the MHPS Tactical Team, executed a search warrant at a residence on Industrial Avenue and located a sawed-off shotgun, defaced Ruger 10/22 rifle with live ammo, a replica handgun, bear spray and a machete.

All four youth have been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon without a licence, possession of a firearm without a licence, defacing or removing a firearm’s serial number, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, uttering threats, as well as three counts of breaching release conditions.

Police say two of the youth were released on bail with conditions, while the other two have been remanded into provincial youth custody. All four are expected to appear before court in April.
