Alberta RCMP is reminding business owners across the province to be mindful of crime prevention practices in order to reduce theft and damage. With 4,460 reports of business break-and-enters within Alberta RCMP jurisdiction in 2024, they have come forward with a few tips to help keep properties secure. Quality alarm systems and cameras are a must to deter many instances of would-be burglary. Cameras should provide full coverage of the space, or points of entry at minimum. Adequate lighting both inside and outside in the form of motion-activated lights can also help dissuade crime, as can a high fence, roll shutters, or bars on windows for added protection. “Budgeting for security measures such as sturdy locks, quality cameras and an alarm system can pay off in the long run. These investments can make a difference in preventing theft and identifying criminals,” said Alberta RCMP. RCMP also recommend keeping track of all keys or fobs that access commercial property, keeping valuables secured and away from windows after hours, and windows clear of posters or stickers. For more tips and information, Business Security brochures are available for free at all RCMP detachments across the province. 8
