The community has rallied to support a local family as they take care of their three young children who were struck by a vehicle on Monday morning on their way to school.
Lethbridge Police shared in a statement that just after 7:30 a.m. on Monday, police responded to a report that three children, ages 14, 7 and 5, were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of 13 Avenue and 23 Street North. EMS transported the children to Chinook Regional Hospital and all three were subsequently transported to Calgary for further treatment.
Investigation determined the children were crossing in a marked crosswalk when they were struck by a vehicle travelling southbound on 23 Street North. The driver stopped and remained on scene. Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
After learning about the tragedy, Kyera Kowal created a gofundme campaign to help her close family friends Paula and Marc Bucud concentrate on their children’s recovery instead of their financial obligations.
“Paula, Marc and their children hold a special place in our hearts, being so very close to our family. They are the first people to help other by connecting them to resources and friends,” says Kowal in a statement shared with the Herald.
She explains that Marc works for a local organization and Paula is graduating from Lethbridge Polytechnic in the spring.
“Right now, they are facing an imaginable tragedy and will need all the support they can get, both now and in the months ahead,” says Kowal. “While the future remains uncertain, your kindness and generosity will go a long way in helping them navigate this incredibly difficult time.”
Kowal shared an update later on Monday stating, “The youngest is currently recovering, and at this time the two oldest are currently awaiting and in surgery at the children’s hospital in Calgary. ”
She adds that they deeply appreciate any assistance that can be provided to the family, whether that be through donations, prayers or simply by sharing their story.
“Updates will continue to be shared on the GoFundMe page as we stand together to support the Bucud family,” says Kowal.
In the GoFundMe page Kowal says Paula and Marc Bucud are two of the most generous and kind-hearted people you could ever meet. “They have always put their family, friends, and community first, often going out of their way to lend a helping hand or offer support to anyone in need. Whether it’s volunteering their time, sharing a warm smile, or simply being there to listen, they embody what it means to be truly selfless.”
